The medal was first instituted in 1894, and made retrospective to include campaigns dating back to 1884
The geogrpahic scope of this campaign medal covered many areas and campaigns that took place in the Horn of Africa, during the colonial 'Scramble for Africa'. Most notable in this period was the ill-fated Italian expedition to Ethiopia 1895.1896, where at the Battle of Adowa,on 1 March 1896 an Italian force of approximately 17,700 men was defeated by the Ethiopians - with the Italians losing an estimated 6394 men killed in the battle (Ethiopian losses are estimated to have been 3867 killed)
