This medal was established by Royal Decree on 20 October 1947, for award to all members of the Belgian Armed Forces who were made Prisoner of War and incarcerated by the enemy during the Second World War

Full-size 40m clasps were authorised for wear on the riband to denote each year of captivity that a POW may have served before repatriation or liberation
