The annual Bengal-Punjab Rifle Association competition meet, was held in the cold weather season, was the premier 'Rifle Shooting Competition' held in India. Various trophies and medals were competed for, by and amongst 'All Ranks' & 'All Races' of the British Army in India, the Indian Army & the various domiciled Volunteer units. Competition was keen, and winning 'Best Shots' were well rewarded. The 1900 Competition was especially noteworthy as it was during that meeting it was announced that the Indian Army and the Volunteers were to be equipped with the new .303 rifle, to replace the Martini-Henry rifles until then used by the Indian Army and Volunteers
