Liyakat Medal (Liyakat Madalyasi), or 'Medal of Merit' was first instituted in 1890, and became the standard military decoration for rewarding acts of distinguished service nature of its award criteria (the reverse translation of the decoration specifies that the award was 'Medal of Merit Specially for Those Who Have Shown Loyalty and Bravery'
