The recipient had served in Northern Ireland prior to deploying with his battalion to the South Atlantic, where the men of 2/Scots Guards earned distinction for their action art the capture of Mount Tumbledown - whereat men of the Scots Guards were awarded one Distinguished Service Order, two Military Crosses, two Distinguished Conduct Medals (one posthumously) and two Military Medals, reflecting the hard fought close combat conditions during which the 'Jock's' use of superior 'Bayonet-Work' prevailed to win a hard earned victory for the British, in the last major action of the Falklands Campaign
