The recipient was a soldier of Gurkha ethnicity who held the appointment of 'Bugler' while serving in the 44th Regiment, Gurkha (Light) Infantry, an infantry regiment of the Indian Army

In 1903, the unit was restyled as 8th Gurkha Rifles in 1903 - and was a Gurkha Regiment with a long and very distinguished history of campaign service on the North East Frontier of India, Burma and in Tibet
