This regiment, with its Headquarters at Kroonstad, recruited amongst Afrikaans speaking white South African's residing in the Orange Free State

During the Second World War the regiment did not deploy outside of the Union of South Africa, however from 1940, the regiment provided drafts to the Regiment President Steyn, which latter unit served in East Africa, Egypt & Libya, including being present at El Alamein
