Frederick Hastings Findlay, son of James Alexander Findlay (a Scot) Margaret Findlay (nee Brown) was a native of Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland, England, where he was born on, 1880. By trade an 'Engineer', Frederick enlisted for the British Army, and service with the Imperial Yeomanry, when he attested at Newcastle on, 21 February 1901. He subsequently served overseas in South Africa between, 25 March 1901 - 8 September 1902 (1 year & 168 days). On taking his discharge from the British Army, on, 15 September 1902, his conduct and character were described as 'Very Good'.
