Important: Less than 150 x medals (newspaper reports state 142) are recorded as being issued. The main presentation of medal took place in Leith, on, 19 December 1902, with the names & service details of the majority of recipients subsequently published in the local newspaper 'Leith Burgh Pilot' issue of 20 December 1902. The criteria for award of the medal appears to be only 'Volunteers', who were ordinarily civilian residents of Leith, and who had enrolled / enlisted during the course of the South African War
