George Edward Gardener attested into the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry for service during the Great War and served in Mesopotamia with the 1st Battalion from 24 February 1915. He was taken prisoner during the siege of Kut-al-Amara and subsequently awarded the M.S.M. ‘in recognition of devotion to duty and valuable services rendered whilst prisoners of war interned’ (London Gazette 30 January 1920, with the award dated 5 May 1919)
