The recipient was an enrolled Indian 'Non Combatant', serving as a follower with the 1st Battalion 1st Gurkha Rifles
1st Battalion 1st Gurkha Rifles served in the Burma campaign during the Second World War, and in the immediate post-war operations was one of the Gurkha battalions (together with the war raised sister 3rd Battalion 1st Gurkha Rifles) to serve in French-Indochina (now Vietnam) between 1945-46, where the battalion was engaged against Viet Minh nationalist forces. Post-independence, the 1st Gurkha Rifles served in the Indian Army, and in 1950, were re-styled 1st Gorkha Rifles (The Maulan Regiment). The regiment - now a multi battalion regiment - continues to serve in the present day Indian Army, where it has its regimental centre located at Sabathu
