The recipient was a Punjabi Musalman holding the senior appointment and rank of Quarter Master Daffadar (Quarter-Master Sergeant) while serving with the 31st Duke of Connaught's Own Lancers, a cavalry regiment of the British Indian Army
The 31st (D.C.O.) Lancers amalgamated with the 32nd Lancers in 1921, and in 1922 the regiment was re-styled as 13th Duke of Connaught's Own Bombay Lancers. In 1927 the regiment was again restyled, as 13th Duke of Connaught's Own Lancers. The regiment was allocated to Pakistan in August 1947
