Recipient was an Indian soldier of the Sikh faith that was holding the rank of Lance-Dafadar (Corporal, or Lance-Sergeant) while serving with the Scinde Horse (14th Prince of Wales's Own Cavalry), a cavalry regiment of the British Indian Army

During the Second World War, Scinde Horse was a mechanised regiment that served variously: As a frontier armoured regiment based at Dera Ismail Khan (North West Frontier) for two years before deploying overseas to PAIFORCE in Persia, and later seeing service in Egypt and Syria
