An estimated 45,000 medals were awarded to Syrians were deployed and served under combat conditions during the 'October War'. The Syrian's fought principally in the region of the Golan Heights (that were captured by Israel), and apart from the loss in strategic territory, suffered an estimated 3500 all-ranks killed, and considerable losses in, tanks, artillery, aircraft and motor transport
