Rudolph Ernest Balzer (1883-1975), third son of Saxony, Germany, born settler parents Friedrich Wilhelm Balzer & Wilhelmine Friedericke Balzer (nee Gombert) was born in King's William Town, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa on, 5 July 1883. Rudolph was one of 12 children born to his German parents, comprising 5 x daughters & 7 x sons. Described as a 'Farmer' and claiming to be 18 years of age, Rudolph attested for the Cape Police at King William's Town, on, 14 August 1900. At time of his enlistment he described himself as 'German' and claimed to be accustomed to to travel on horseback and to be accustomed to handling firearms. Subsequently appointed Lance-Corporal, his career with the Cape Police came to an end on 16 November 1903, when he was dismissed for 'Falsification of Books'. Rudolph is recorded to have died in Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa in 1975
