The Order of Naval Merit was established in 1946 under the name "Peruvian Cross of Naval Merit", to reward Peruvian military personnel who had demonstrated extraordinary naval merit in the exercise of its functions. It can also be granted to foreign nationals.

There are four grades or classes of award to this Order, viz Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander and Knight
