The medal - the last to be instituted in the Princely State of Bahawalpur - was instituted by Nawab Sir Sadiq Muhammad Khan V Abbasi, in commemoration of the accession of Bahawalpur State to the Dominion of Pakistan that took place on 5 October 1947

By population, the Princely State of Bahawalpur was the largest of the pre-independence Princely States to accede allegiance to Pakistan in 1947
