The Uganda Rifles were raised in 1894, comprising both African companies and an Indian Contingent (this latter drawn from amongst Indian Army regulars who had volunteered for 'Africa'. In 1902 the Uganda Rifles were re-styled as the 4th & 5th (Uganda) Battalions of the King's African Rifles
