Augustus Marthinus Dumas was born in South Africa on 17 March 1907.By occupation a 'Farmer', his next of kin was his brother 'Mr. H. Dumas' who resided at P.O. Acornhoek, Eastern Transvaal, Union of South Africa
On enlistment, in 1940, Augustus held the rank of Private and was posted to the 1st Battalion Royal Natal Carbineers, with which regiment he embarked for service in 'East Africa' (Somaliland & Ethopia Campaigns). Augustus was subsequently commissioned and became a Send-Lieutenant (War-Substantive Lieutenant) with the General Service Corps
