The medal was instituted in 1953 to replace the award series first created in 1926 that hitherto bore the portrait of Vittorio Emanuele III. The medal is awarded in three grades or classes the different grades representing different periods f service. The 'Gold' grade, or 1st Class, and is awarded for long service in the air force for 25 years’ service
