The recipient Manbahadur Thapa was a Nepalese soldier of Gurkha ethnicity and the Hindu faith, who held the rank of Rifleman in a battalion of 2nd, 6th, 7th or 10th Gurkha Rifles of the former British Indian Army, who had been serving on 15th August 1947, and who transferred their service to the British Army with effect from 1 January 1948

All Gurkhas of all ranks (but NOT their British Officers), who met above criteria, were awarded the Indian Independence Medal

All Indian Independence Medals awarded to Gurkhas of the British Army, had the generic abbreviation G.R., for Gurkha Rifles indented on the rim of their medals, and none were issued showing the actual regiment designation
