The recipient, was an Indian soldier of the Sikh faith, the rank & appointment of Havildar/Clerk (Sergeant/Clerk) while serving with the Bombay Engineer Group of the Royal Indian Engineers, of the British Indian Army

The Bombay Engineer Group was - and still is - one of 3 x Combat Engineer Groups of the Indian Army. The regimental centre is located at Kirkee Cantonment near Pune, India

Each of the 4 x Indian Infantry Divisions that deployed to Netherlands East Indies (now Indonesia) and or Indo-China (Now Vietnam) contained one Company of the Royal Bombay Sappers and Miners as under:

- 5th Indian Division: (Netherlands East Indies) 20th Field Service Company Royal Bombay Sappers & Miners
- 23rd Indian Division: (Netherlands East Indies) 91st Field Company Royal Bombay Sappers & Miners
- 26th Indian Division: (Netherlands East Indies) 28th & 98th Field Company's and 328th Field Park Company Royal Bombay Sappers & Miners

- 20th Indian Division: (Indochina) 481st Field Company Royal Bombay Sappers & Miners

During the period of the qualification criteria for the clasp 'S. E. Asia 1945-46'', the recipient would have served in Netherlands East Indies (Indonesia)
