The 21st Regiment of Native Infantry had its origins in the 2nd Extra Battalion that was established in 1820 from the Poona Auxiliary Force. In 1824 it was re-styled as 21st Regiment Native Infantry. In it's relatively short history it saw considerable service in Sind (Scinde) Province Reference 'History of the Bombay Army' (Sir Patrick Cadell, 1937), the below following is a summary of the active campaign service of the regiment:
- 1840 Sind: Kotra
- 1843 Sind: Hyderabad
- 1844 Sind: Kolhapur
Although the Bombay Army remained largely loyal and un-affected by the events of the Great Mutiny that swept through North and Central India in 1857. However, not all Bombay units remained true to their salt, and the 21st N.I. was such a unit, as it had partially mutinied in 1857. As a consequence of the partial mutiny, the regiment was disarmed and in 1858 it was disbanded
