The recipient was an Indian soldier of the Hindu faith holding the rank of Private while serving with the 6th Regiment of Native Infantry, a unit of the Bombay Presidency Army of the Honourable East India Company

The 6th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry could trace its origins to 1775. During its existence, the unit had a long record of active campaign service, and carried the Battle Honour 'Seringapatam' awarded for the defeat of Tipu Sultan in 1799 - the honour being awarded to the regiment in 1823.
