- IGS 1908-35. GV 2nd issue 'North West Frontier 1930-31' (Asst. Surgn. K. C. Uppal, Civ. Med. Dept.)

Medals & Clasps Verification: The IGS 1908 medal rolls for Civil Medical Officers are not available in the public domain. However, the recipient is known to have been a Government Health Officer in the North West Frontier Province throughout the 1930's. The sources for confirming his entitlements are cited below:

- GSM Medal & clasp: WO 100/12/422 shown as Indian Medical Service (Tempy Commission) & Medical Officer 2/9th Delhi Infantry. Medal sent C.C.I.S. Hospital Mardan, N.W.F.P.
- IGS Medal & clasp: Recipient confirmed North West Frontier Province 1931-1949 (UK Medical Registers show he registered on 26/09/31 when he was IG Civil Hospitals, Peshawar, N.W.F.P.)

Note: Captain K. C. Uppal, was not entitled or awarded any other Great War era medals - his two extant Medal Index Cards both only showing entitlement to the General Service Medal with clasp 'Iraq'

The recipient Karam Chand Uppal, was an Indian of the Hindu faith, and a very well qualified medical physician, who later became a long serving Public Health Officer, in the North West Frontier Province of British India, and later in Pakistan. During the Great War Karam Chand Uppal was first commissioned as a Temporary Lieutenant in the Indian Medical Service. The London Gazette issue of, 2 July 1920, contained a promtions notice showing tha Temporary Lieutenant Karam Chand Uppal was promoted to be a Temporary Captain with effect from, 19 September 1919

The Civil and Military Gazette issue of 19 May 1923, contained the below notice:

RESIGNATIONS

Indian Medical Service

The undermentioned officers are permitted to resign their temporary commissions, and to retain the rank of Captain:-

- Captain N. Chakravarty, March 11, 1922;

and

- Captain K. C. Uppal, February 3. 1923

After the partition of British India, Doctor Karam Chan Uppal, remained in his senior Government Appointment in Pakistan, where in 1949, he was holding the position of Assistant Director of Public Health in the North West Frontier Province (an article he wrote titled 'Infantile Paralysis: Symptoms & Treatment' was published in the 'Civil and Military Gazette' issue of 27 November 1949
