The recipient was an Indian soldier of the Mussalman faith who held the rank of Driver while serving with the Mountain Artillery Training Centre, of the British Indian Army

The Mountain Artillery Training Centre was first established on 15 August 1920, when it was located at Dehra Dun. After a subsequent move to Lucknow, by 1928 the M.A.T.C. had relocated to Ambala.

The purpose of the Mountain Artillery Training Centre was two-fold:

1. To recruit, approve, enrol and train all recruits for Indian Mountain Artillery, and the Indian Drivers for British Mountain Artillery

2. To keep and administer the records of all Indian Mountain Artillery units
