The recipient was an Indian soldier of the Mussalman faith who held the rank of Gunner while serving at the Mountain Artillery Training Centre of the British Indian Army

The Mountain Artillery Training Centre was first established on 15 August 1920, when it was located at Dehra Dun. After a subsequent to Lucknow, in 1928, the M.A.T.C. had relocated to Ambala.

The purpose of the Mountain Artillery Training Centre was two-fold:

1. To recruit, approve, enrol and train all recruits for Indian Mountain Artillery, and the Indian Drivers for British Mountain Artillery

2.To keep and administer the records of all Indian Mountain Artillery units
