Uncommonly for the Gordon Highlanders, Colour-Sergeant H. J. Bryant, who served for 21 years on 'Home Service' in the United Kingdom and Ireland, this was the recipients only medal entitlement

Henry James Bryant, was a native of Tring, Aylesbury, Hertfordshire, England, where he was born circa 1866. By trade a 'Painter', he was 18 years and 10 months of age when he enlisted in the British Army at London, on 7 November 1884 on which date he was posted to the Gordon Highlanders (his preferred regiment of choice). On joining the Gordon Highlander Regimental Depot in Aberdeen, Scotland, he was given the regimental number, 1661. On 1 April 1886, he was posted to the 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders. Henry was evidently a professional career soldier of considerable talents. By the time he took his final discharge from the British Army on, 21 December 1907, he had accumulated 23 years & 55 days reckonable service towards pension. 23 March 1904. He was never reduced from his ranks, and his is promotions during his long career were:

- Lance-Sergeant: 09/02/1888
- Sergeant: 16/09/1888

From 29 January 1897, James was transferred to the Permanent Staff of the 3rd (Militia) Battalion Gordon Highlanders. James held a 1st Class Certificate of Education, and additionally held a Certificate as Sergeant-Instructor in Musketry. He had married Ann Howes at Tring, on 18 December 1895. At discharge his military character and conduct were described as 'Exemplary'
