Important: Awarded the Indian Order of Merit 3rd Class, for gallantry in Nagaland in 1875
The recipient was a Nepalese soldier of Gurkha ethnicity and the Hindu faith, who held the rank of 'Sepoy' while serving with the 44th Regimental of Native Infantry of the Bengal Army
In 1903 the 44th Regiment Native Infantry were re-styled as 8th Gurkha Rifles in 1903

See G.G.O. 1132 of 12 November 1875 in which the recipient (shown as 581 Sepoy Jungbir Khuttree), is one of 3 x Gurkhas included for the below citation.

For conspicuous gallantry during the operations recently carried out in the Naga Hills, in checking the advance and repelling the repeated attacks of the enemy when attached to the rear guard which covered the retreat of the survivors of the late Lieutenant Holcombe's Naga Survey, on the 2nd February 1875

This is just one of 4 x IOM's awarded in for Nagaland in 1875 - all awarded to the same regiment (three in G.G.O. 1132, the other in a separate G.G.O.)
In the above referenced work, the recipient is shown as Jungbir Khuttree, with simple forename phonetic transliteration - the medal is however clearly named to one and the same man
