William's body was recovered from the battlefield, and he now lies buried at the Dury Crucifix Cemetery, France, where his life and supreme self sacrifice is commemorated in perpetuity by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. His memorial headstone in the cemetery is engraved with his regimental badge and service details
Photograph of Recipient: The Edinburgh Evening News issue of 23 October 1918, contains a fine captioned photographed of the recipient in which he is wearing his 'Balmoral Bonnet' with tourie and badge of the 'Royal Highlanders' (Black Watch). The photograph is in a block of portraits under the caption 'Scots Who Have Died For Their Country', with the detail, that shows that Private William Hook's Edinburgh residence address was located at 3 Washington Street.
