James Hunter Dickson Imrie, son of John Imrie (residence at 5 Regent Park Terrace, Strathbungo, Glasgow), was a native of Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, where he was born circa 1869. At the age of 24 years, William enlisted in the British Army at Aldershot, Hampshire, on 22 May 1893, and prior to enlisting he had been employed as a 'Clerk'. On joining the British Army he was posted to the Scottish Rifles (Cameronians). His initial terms of engagement were to be 7 x years 'With the Colours' & 5 x years with the 'Army Reserve'. At time of taking his final discharge from the British Army in May 1914, he had accumulated 21 years reckonable service towards pension. Prior to taking his final discharge, James was holding the rank of Private, and had been serving with 'C' Company 2nd Battalion Scottish Rifles. His record of service by location was:
