John Russell, son of Robert Russell (who as the recipient's notified next of kin is recorded residing at 270 Parliamentary Road, Glasgow, Scotland) was a native of the parish of Barony, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, where he was born in 1863. By trade a 'Labourer, John Russell enlisted in the British Army, at Glasgow on 30 March 1883. On enlistment John was posted to the regimental depot of the Royal Scots Fusiliers, which he joined at Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland he next day on, 31 March 1883.
