The recipient was a Pakistani soldier of the Mussalman faith, who on 14 August 1947, held the rank of Havildar (Sergeant) while serving with the Royal Pakistan Artillery, and who prior to the partition of India in August 1947, had served with the Royal Indian Artillery of the British Indian Army, in which army he had, at least from 1937, formerly held the rank of Gunner while serving with the 8th Mountain Battery
8th (Lahore) Mountain Battery: Like every Mountain Battery of the former British Indian Army, the 8th (Lahore) Mountain Battery which had it's origins in 1886, underwent a bewildering number of name changes during its existence, per the regimental chronology below:
1886 raised as the 2nd Bengal Mountain Battery
1899 became the 8th (Bengal) Mountain Battery
1901 became the Lahore Mountain Battery
1903 became the 28th Mountain Battery
1920 became the 28th Pack Battery
1921 became the 28th (Lahore) Pack Battery
1922 became the 108th (Lahore) Pack Battery
1924 became part of the Royal Regiment of Artillery as the 128th (Lahore) Pack Battery R.A.
1927 became the 8th (Lahore) Indian Mountain Battery R.A.
1928 became the 8th (Lahore) Mountain Battery R.A.
1939 became the 8th (Lahore) Mountain Battery I.R.A
In 1939, 8th (Lahore) Mountain Battery Indian Royal Artillery was grouped with three other Mountain Battery's (viz, 23rd (Peshawar( F.F.); 17th (Nowshera) & 12th (Poonch) Mountain Batteries, to form the 23rd Mountain Regiment, which had it's headquarters at Abbottabad in the North West Frontier Province of British India. Between 1942-1945, 8th (Lahore) Mountain Battery served in East Bengal and during the Burma Campaign latterly under higher formation 20th Indian Division. 8th (Lahore) Mountain Battery transferred to the Pakistan Army in August 1947
