Allan Paterson Ireland, second son of James Ireland (Spirit Merchant) and Margaret Ireland was a native of Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, where he was born circa 1896. At the time of the compilation of the National Census for Scotland in 1901, James is recorded as living with his parents and older sibling brother, John Ireland (b. circa 1891), at their residence located at 281, Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow. Allan was a pre-war member of the Territorial Force, his regimental number being in a range 2000** being used for enlistments to the 5th Battalion (City of Glasgow) Battalion Highland Light Infantry, for men who enlisted in the battalion in 1912. During the first quarter of 1917, Allan, married Rachel 'Ray' Elizabeth Copeland (a Glasgow born daughter of an Ulster Scots farmer) at Richmond, Yorkshire, England. Retaining his TF regimental number, Sergeant Ireland served overseas in Mesopotamia 1st Battalion Highland Light Infantry, where he fought in the campaign against the Ottoman Turkish Army. Post-war, Sergeant Ireland served on the North West Frontier of British India during the Third Afghan War , at which time he was attached to 1st Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry (IGS 1908 medal roll refers). After taking his demobilization from the British Army on 29 October 1919, Allan returned to his native Glasgow, where he had a long career as a 'Shipping Clerk. Allan Paterson Ireland is recorded to have died at Glasgow, Scotland, on, 21 January 1960. At the time of his death he had been living at his daughter's residence located at 62 Brora Street, Glasgow, his usual residence being 133 Balornock Road, Glasgow. He was succeeded by his wife, 'Ray' Elizabeth Ireland
