Killed-in-Action by enemy U-Boat U-46: Chief Steward Charles William Porter, is confirmed having been 'Drowned as a result of an attack by an enemy submarine' on 24 March 1916, when he was one of the crew of the S.S. Englishman (Liverpool) that was attacked torpedoed and sunk by the German U-Boat U-46 near Malin Head. At the time of his loss of life, Charles was 51 years of age. On the day of the attack and sinking, 10 x crew-members of the S.S. Englishman lost their lives - Charles William Porter (51 years of age) was the oldest crew-member to have been killed in the U-Boat attack.
SS Englishman: Was a British steamer of 5257 tons, whose home port was Liverpool. On 24 March 1916, the 'Englishman' was on a voyage from Avonmouth to Portland, Maine, United States, when she was torpedo-attacked and sunk by the German submarine U-43 (Captain Hellmuth Jürst), 30 miles northeast of Malin Head, Donegal, Ireland. 10 persons were lost

Charles William Porter, was a native of Shirehampton, Bristol, Somerset, where he was born c. 1865. Prior to the Great War he had been a member of the Merchant Navy. During the Great War he served with the Merchant Navy and the Mercantile Fleet Auxiliary. While serving aboard the S.S. Englishman some 30 miles northeast of Malin Head, his vessel was torpedoed and sunk by the German U-Boat U-46 on 24 March 1916. Charles William Porter was one of the 10 lives lost with the sinking of this vessel. His body was never recovered from the sea, and his life and supreme sacrifice is commemorated in perpetuity by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission on the Tower Hill Memorial
