Bugler: Per the naming protocols applied to Great War medals, only the campaign stars bore 'Appointments (Bugler etc). However it is clear from evidence that John Hargan retained the appointment of Bugler (with 'A' Coy 5/HLI) throughout the war years 1914-1918 (the Fife newspaper issue of 1918, refers to 'Bugler' Hargan having acknowledged from the front, his thanks for receipt of a comforts parcel received form the local 'Wemyss War Fund'
Bugler Hargan served with 1/5th Battalion H.L.I. at Gallipoli during the Dardanelles campaign of 1915, then in Egypt in 1916 thence to Palestine with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force, and from April 1918 served in France and Flanders

- August 1914: Glasgow. Mobilized as a constituent uni of the HLI Brigade, and sent to Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland, for training
- 11 May 1915: Dunfermline. Formation became 157th Brigade in 52nd (Lowland) Division.
- 26 May 1915: Sailed from Devonport for Gallipoli, landing at Cape Helles on 2 July.
- 8 January 1916: Evacuated from Gallipoli to Mudros and arrived Egypt in February 1916. Thereafter served in Palestine with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force
- 11 April 1918: Lowland Division left Egypt, arrived Marseilles , France, 17 April for service on Western Front
John Percy Hargan, eldest son and eldest child of William John Hargan (Plumber & Gas-Fitter) & Margaret Wilson Hargan (nee Percy) was a native of Glasgow, Scotland, where he was born in 1890. At the time of the compilation of the Scottish National Census in 1901, John is shown recorded as a scholar, living with his parents and three siblings (his younger sisters Agnes Hargan (8) & Maggie Hargan (1), together with his younger brother William Hargan (4), at their residence located at 170 Garscube Road, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. John Hargan, appears to have joined the Territorial Force in 1914, if not earlier, and was serving with his local TF unit, 5th (City of Glasgow) Battalion Highland Light Infantry, when he had volunteered for overseas active service. He was holding the regimental number No. 1387 and the appointment 'Bugler' when his battalion was mobilised and posted to the higher formation 52nd Lowland Division, for training at Dunfermline, Fife. While stationed in Dunfermline, John developed a loving relationship with a local lass, who, prior to embarking for overseas active service in 1915, he married. Bugler John Hargan, wed on, 4 May 1915, at Buckhaven, Fife, Scotland. John Percy Hargan described as a 'Hammerman' by trade and also as 'Bugler 1387 'A' Coy, 5th Batt H.L.I.', married, Marjory Love (a Linen Weaver), of 65 West High Street, Buckhave Fif, at Marjory's home town of Buckhaven. at Marjory's home town of the 1915. The marriage took place at Buckhaven Fifle, Scotland.John Hargan married John, described as an 'Engineers Labourer', is recorded to have died of 'Pulmonary Tuberculosis' on, 22 November 1947, at his residence located at, 1 Raglan Street in the Milton district of Glasgow, Scotland.
