Wounded-in-Action: Lance-Corporal William Edward Barnes of 'D' Company 5th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment is confirmed having been 'Wounded-in-Action' in France, in January 1916, with a 'Gunshot & Shrapnel Wound to the left arm. At the time of his wound his age was entered as 41 years of age, and was admitted to the No.2 General Hospital on 9 January 1916, and from there was on 11 January 1916, transferred to the Hospital Ship St. Patrick for repatriation to the United Kingdom for further treatment

William Edward Barnes enlisted with the Royal Berkshire Regiment on 8 January 1915 and would have initially joined one of the training battalions. He was posted to France in July that year and joined the 5th Royal Berkshire Regiment at Ypres, later seeing action at the Battle of Loos in September where they moved into the support trenches. During the second attack on the Germans in October, they were positioned at the Hulluch Quarries. Wounded-in-Action in early January 1916, he was admitted to No 2. General Hospital on 9 January 1916, and then transferred to the Hospital Ship St. Patrick on, 11 January 1916. Whether William ever returned to his unit on the Western Front after January 1916 is not known. What is known, is that William Edward Barnes took his final discharge from the British Army on 11 August 1916, due to the effects of wounds
