Frank Grout, son of John Grout (a Farm Labourer) & Harriett Grout (nee Hammond) was a native of the parish of South Bersted, Bognor, Sussex, where he was born in 1853, and where he was christened on 23 September 1853. Described as a 'Labourer', he was 19 years of age, when he attested for service in the British Army at, Hilsea, Hampshire, England, on 9 May 1872, and on which date he was posted to the Royal Regiment of Artillery. During his subsequent 21 years service with the British Army, Frank's record of home and overseas service was:
- Home: 09/05/1872-13/01/1874, 1 year & 250 x days
- India (inc Afghanistan): 14/01/1874-26/05/1884, 10 years & 134 x days
- Home: 27/05/1884-08/05/1893, 8 years & 347 x days
At the time of his final discharge in 1893, having completed 21 years service with the Royal Regiment of Artillery of the British Army, his military conduct and character were described on one word as 'Exemplary'
In retirement, Frank Grout was latterly a Lodging House Keeper, residing with his wife Mary Jane Grout (nee Barrett), at No 4 Lansdowne Place, Bognor, Sussex (the 1901 National Census for England & Wales refers). Frank Grout is recorded to have died at Bognor, Sussex, England, on 22 January 1909, at which time he was described as an 'Army Pensioner'
