REWARDS OF GALLANTRY. - It will be remembered that a short time since that a child was rescued from drowning by, Mr. W.J. Cairns, the Missionary stationed here in connection with the Seamen's Christian Friend Society. On Saturday evening last, a public meeting was held at the Bethel, presided over by Rev. D. Thompson, when two medals were presented to Mr. Cairns, in recognition of his bravery. One was the bronze medal of the Royal Humane Society and the other was the silver medal of the Leuville Life Saving Brigade. - The Chairman remarked that they were met to recognise and honour a most remarkable humane act on the behalf of Mr. Cairns. He called on Mr. Nicol to make the presentation. - Mr. Nicol said he had asked the Lifeboat Institution to provide a life-buoy which might be required when requested, but the funds of that Society would not permit them to do so. He, however, had pleasure in stating that Mr. William Pickard had given a life-buoy, Mr. Cock a line and, Mr. Fishwick a heaving-line, all of which would henceforth in the keeping of Mr. Cairns at the Sailors Rest, and would be available whenever required. He was much pleased to be able to present to Mr. Cairns the two medals: the medal of the Royal Humane Society was accompanied by a certificate, signed by Admiral Ommanney, C.B., F.R.S., and J. W. Home, Esq, Secretary of the Society, the silver medal of the Leuville Life Saving Brigade was accompanied by the following letter addressed to Captain Wilson, through whom the medal was presented:- "Dear Sir, - I have the pleasure of sending you the Leuville Silver Medal for presentation to Mr. Cairns, the brave missionary, for his most gallant conduct. The Marquis our Commander, has much pleasure in joining with the whole Brigade in hearty admiration of this man's brave conduct. I have the honour to remain yours respectfully Edward Renton, Private Sec to the Marquis de Leuville." Mrs. Darracott, pinned the medals on Mr. Cairns breast,. -Mr. Cairns, in returning thanks, that others had rendered assistance in the rescue, and other similar acts had been done previously.
