In 1882, the 93rd (Sutherland Highlanders) Regiment of Foot became 2nd Battalion Princess Louise's (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders)

James McNair, was a native of, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland, where he was born in,1841. James attested for service with the British Army at the county town of Ayr, on 7 February 1859, at which time he was 18 years of age - his extant service papers describe him as a 'Shoemaker' by trade. He was posted to the 93rd (Sutherland Highlanders) Regiment of Foot, and was destined to remain with the same regiment for his entire military career. James went on to serve an initial 21 years 'With the Colours', before re-engaging for a further 5 years 17 days service on the 'Permanent Staff' of the 3rd (Militia) Battalion Princess Louise's (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) between 11/02/80 - 27/02/85. In total James served 26 years & 17 days, and when he took his final discharge held the rank of Colour Sergeant and his character and military conduct were described as having been 'Very Good'. During his long Army career, James had served overseas as under:

- East Indies: 10 years 9 months (including campaign service on the North West Frontier of British India during the 'Umbeyla' campaign of 1863
