The SSM with makers marks on reverse of suspension post 'BBM', and is a medal from the contract awarded to Bailey Banks & Biddle in 1932, the medals to be numbered sequentially 1-50,000. Prior to the start of the 'Pacific War' in December 1941, less than an estimated 12,000 SSM's had been awarded retroactively, to include deeds of gallantry dating back to the Philippines, Great War and for inter-war campaigns / incidents. This medal with its number in the 15,000 plus range was issued post 1941, and most likely awarded in respect of acts of gallantry performed in the Pacific Theatre, North Africa, Sicily, or the skies over Europe 1941-1943
