India: Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. Silver (5732089 L-Hav.Tekbahadur Gurung, 8. G.R.)
The medal was established on 1957, retroactive to 25 March 1953
The medal is not an automatic award, and is only awarded to selected personnel, who have performed distinguished service in addition to having completed a minimum of 15 years service (prior to 1970, it was 18 years service), and is awarded with a one-off payment gratuity. Medals are awarded to the armed forces at a rate of 4 x medals for each 800 personnel in service
This is an award to denote long service and good conduct - and not just 'long service'
Recipients of this medal can also qualify and receive any of the Indian Armed Forces 'Long Service' medals, if they meet the qualifying length of services criteria for the 9,years, 20 years etc....long service medals
The recipient was a Nepalese or Indian born soldier of Gurkha ethnicity and the Hindu faith who held the non-commissioned-officer rank of Lance-Havildar (Lance-Sergeant) while serving with the 8th Gorkha Rifles, an infantry regiment of the Indian Army
8th Gorkha Rifles was one of the 6 x Gurkha Rifles Regiments of the former British Indian Army, to serve in the Indian Army after independence on 15 August 1947. During the 'Dominion' era the regiment continued to be styled as 8th Gurkha Rifles, only changing their designation to 8th Gorkha Rifles in 1950
The medal fitted with a good long length of the correct ordnance issue riband - this latter generally very hard to find
