Instituted in 1917, the medal was awarded with 6 different medal ribands, viz, riband for invalids, and 5 x other ribands awarded to those who had been wounded in combat between 1 to 5 times respectively

The medal is suspended from a silk Austrian tri-fold riband with fittings
