India (Dominion): Independence Medal 1947 (86130 Rfn. Dille Gurung, 1-8 G.R.)

The recipient Dille Gurung was a Nepalese soldier of Gurkha ethnicity and the Hindu faith, who held the rank of Rifleman who was serving with the 1st Battalion 8th Gurkha Rifles of the Indian Army on 15 August 1947

A search of casualty lists and nominal rolls of honours and awards to 8 GR, show that the recipients regimental number is within the range of regimental enlistments issued circa 1942-1944, and hence would almost certainly have been entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Burma Star, War Medal and the General Service Medal 1919 with clasp 'S.E. Asia 1945-46', which medals 1/8 GR were entitled to for their services in Burma 1944-45, and in the post -war operations in Netherlands East Indies 1945-46 (the India Service Medal was awarded for 3 years non-operational service in India 1939-45)

During the period of the qualification criteria for the Burma Star, 1/8 GR served with the 36th Indian Infantry Brigade, under higher formation 26th Indian Division. For the post-war operations in 'S. E. Asia 1945-46' (December 1945 - May 1946), 1/8 GR served under higher formation 23rd Indian Division (The Fighting Cock's) in Java, Netherlands East Indies
