The recipient Chanan Singh was an Indian soldier of the Sikh faith who held the rank of Sapper while serving with the King George's Own Bengal Sappers and Miners, an Engineers unit of the British Indian Army

The respective qualifying dates in theatre for each of the clasps earned by Chana Singh were:
- Kirkuk (Kurdistan): 01/11/1918 to 27/08/1919
- Iraq: 11/03/1920 to 07/04/1921
An abstract summary to the referenced medal roll shows that 913 x named General Service Medals 1918 with 1146 various clasps were issued to the various companies of the Bengal Sappers & Miners for their services in Iraq, Kurdistan and Persia 1918-1924. 913 x named medals together with 18 x un-named medals were sent to the regimental centre at Roorkee, India, on,12 December 1924, Of the named medals there were 204 medals with the 2 x clasp combination 'Kurdistan' & 'Iraq'. Although 913 x named medals were sent, no less than 466 x medals with various clasps and clasp combinations, were subsequently returned to the issuing authority in the United Kingdom for scrapping!
