Medals & Clasps Verification: No. 10002 Private Walter McLaughlin is confirmed being entitled the IGS 1908 medal and clasp for his service in the Third Afghan War, and in addition had prior qualified for three Great War campaign medals per below referenced medal rolls:

- 1914-15 Star: WO 329/2793 Shown as transferred to Class Z Reserve 6 December 1919
- British War Medal. Silver issue: WO 329/1643
- Interallied Victory Medal: WO 329/1643
- IGS 1908-35 'AF NWF': WO 100/52/462 1/HLI att'd 1/Durham Light Infantry

William McLaughlin, was a native of Lochgilphead, Argyllshire, Scotland, where he was born circa 1888. He was a professional soldier and a pre-war regular. William's unique Regimental Number '10002' denotes that he enlisted in the British Army sometime in late November 1905 (other 'Regulars' Nos 9996 Eugen Teahan & 10005 Allen Gilchrist, are recorded to have enlisted and been posted to the Highland Light Infantry respectively on, 22 November 1905 & December 1905). At the time of the compilation of the service returns for the National Census for England & Wales in 1911, William McLaughlin - the only person of that name serving with 1/HLI - is recorded serving with 'I' Company 1st Battalion Highland Light Infantry, located at Lucknow Cantonment, British India. On the outbreak of the Great War, in August 1914, William was still serving with 1/HLI, then stationed at Ambala Cantonment, Punjab, India. 1/HLI served with the Sirhind Brigade, under higher formation, 3rd (Lahore) Indian Division. 1/HLI - together with William McLaughlin - embarked for France, via Egypt, and disembarked at Marseilles, France on 1 December 1914 (William's Medal Roll & Medal Index Cards both affirm his disembarkation in France on 01/12/14). Private McLaughlin was subsequently wounded-in-action during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in March 1915. Following the Indian Corps transfer to Mesopotamia at the end of 1915, Private McLaughlin together with his unit, 1st Battalion Highland Light Infantry, later served in the Mesopotamia Campaign fighting against the Ottoman Turkish Army

A most interesting medal to a 'Jock' who is confirmed as having fought three different enemy forces viz, German, Turkish and Afghans in the period 1914-1919, during which he was wounded-in-action on at least one occasion while serving on the Western Front, in 1915
