Medal(s) & Clasps Verification: No. 86177 Gunner James Judd is shown entitled to the QSA with 4 x clasps, and the award of the Kings South Africa Medal with 2 x clasps per below referenced medal rolls

- QSA Medal: With 4 x clasps: WO 100/143. Roll signed Potchefstroom 17/09/01 shows entitlement to, C.C., O.F.S., TR, & ROL
- KSA Medal: With 2 x dated South Africa clasps: WO 100/308. Shown on roll serving with 6th Depot

The medal, carriage and clasps all equally toned, and the clasps all with uniform rivets as issued. Presumably (as evinced) by the different unit shown on the medal roll for the recipients King's South Africa medal, the recipient was entitled to the Tugela Heights clasp (78th Battery were present) and served in another artillery unit to qualify for the Laing's Nek & Belfast Clasps, which were awarded in lieu of his 'Transvaal' clasps

Note: 78th Battery R.F.A. qualified for the clasp 'Tugela Heights' (earned in Natal Colony). The recipient would not have received the clasp 'Transvaal' (as shown on the medal roll) if he did qualify for the Belfast' as the latter clasp was a battle fought in Transvaal State, and the award rule for clasps was that battle clasps would not be awarded in conjunction with state clasps for actions fought in the same states as the respective battles,
