3rd REGT. PUNJAB CAVALRY.
IN the spring of 1880 the 3rd Punjab Cavalry was ordered on service, and quitting Edwardesabad, where it was then stationed, for Kabul, arrived at its destination in the beginning of' April, 1880.
As part of the column under General Ross which left Kabul in the middle of April to effect a junction with the Ghazni Field Force, and returned on the 2nd May, two squadrons of the regiment were engaged in the operations which were conducted, during that interval, in the Logar and Maidan districts.
As part of the force under Brigadier-General Macpherson which proceeded from Sherpur to the support of Brigadier-General Jenkins, in the Chardeh plain, one troop of the regiment was engaged in the second action of Charasiab.
During May, June, and July, 1880, Head-quarters and two squadrons 3rd Punjab Cavalry were engaged in the operations conducted by General Roberts and Brigadier-Generals Baker and C. Gough, in the Logar, Maidan, and Pughman districts.
As a portion of the Cavalry Brigade of the Kabul-Kandahar Field Force, the 3rd Punjab Cavalry accompanied, in August, 1880, the advance from Kabul to the relief of the southern capital, and on the 1 st Sept, was engaged in the defeat of Ayub Khan’s army at the battle of Kandahar, taking part in the pursuit, which was continued till the evening, and pushed beyond the line of the enemy’s retreat towards Khakrez. In this engagement the casualties of the regiment were, 1 British officer (Lieut. L. S. H. Baker), 2 non-commissioned officers, 4 rank and file wounded, 3 horses killed, and 9 wounded.
After taking part with the expeditionary force under Brigadier-General Macgregor in the operations which were conducted against the Marris, the regiment returned to India, and proceeded to Kohat.
