The multi-battalion 8 Punjab Regiment was established in 1923, by the grouping of the former, 89th, 90th, 91st, 92nd, 93rd & 2/89th Punjabis to form a five battalion regiment - the 2/89th becoming the training battalion and designated 10th Battalion 8th Punjab Regiment

All 5 x regular battalions of 8 Punjab deployed on active service 1939-1945, and a further 9 x battalions were raised during the Second World War. In 1947, 8 Punjab Regiment was transferred to the Pakistan Army in August 1947
