Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. Victorian issue (524. Havildar Maj: Shaik Cassim. Ceylon Mauritius Bn R.A.)

The recipient Shaik Cassim, was by ethnicity and faith a 'Moor' of the Mussalman faith, who held the rank of Havildar-Major (Sergeant-Major) while serving with the Ceylon Mauritius Battalion, Royal Regiment of Artillery

Shaik Cassim was born in Ceylon and was 18 years old when he enlisted in the Asiatic Artillery Ceylon, at Colombo, Ceylon Colony in 1881.Shaik Cassim subsequently served as under:

- Ceylon Colony: 25/11/1880 - 01/05/1904
- Mauritius Colony: 02/05/1904 - 10/04/1908

An extremely rare to unit medal award, and the more desirable found in such good condition, which as an example to this unit is unlikely to be bettered

Apart from the Mauritius Police long service medals - also extremely rare - the only Victorian 'Imperial' issue medals to be named including the colony name 'Mauritius', were the extremely few Army long service medals awarded named to the Ceylon Mauritius Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Artillery
